So-called "buffer zone" proposals have been cropping up all over the state. Here's the latest: Last week, Mayor Mamdani vetoed a bill that would have given the NYPD broad authority to establish protest-free zones outside every educational institution in NYC. This was a critical first veto from the mayor, but the New York City Council is now considering a veto override.
In Albany, the Governor Hochul is trying to quietly slip in a 25-foot buffer zone proposal into the state budget, which would give police the power to censor New Yorkers outside of every religious institution and reproductive facility across the state.
